What to Expect During the First Week of Invisalign
Wondering what to expect during the first week of Invisalign clear aligners? You’re not alone – it’s a new, modern technology on its way to replacing traditional braces. There’s naturally some confusion around the treatment process. No worries, we’re here to guide you through the most common tips, issues, and warnings for your first week of wear:
Warning: There’s Mild Discomfort
Invisalign clear aligners shift your teeth with gentle pressure. Consequently, this causes some mild pain as your teeth migrate through your gums. Fortunately, that discomfort usually subsides within the first week as the aligners mold to your mouth. Besides, ibuprofen always alleviates the slight pain from Invisalign clear retainers.
Speaking Is Odd At First
Invisalign clear retainers are removable. However, they must be worn at least 22 hours a day to work properly. While the clear aligners may appear invisible, they certainly still rest snugly on your teeth like most retainers. Unfortunately, this may take some getting used to when it comes to speech. For example, you may notice that your speech is slightly slurred or lisped at certain points. Rest easy, this is a regular occurrence and your speech will quickly adjust to normal.
Insertion & Removal
You wouldn’t think it, but correctly inserting and removing your clear aligners is a bit difficult at first. First, you want to ensure that you’re placing the correct aligners on the correct jaw. For example, you want to make sure your upper aligner goes on your upper jaw, and vice versa. Further, to insert your aligners, simply push the tray over the front portion of your teeth before applying the same pressure to the aligner sections in the back of your jaw. The aligner should snap over your molars. Don’t ever bite your retainers in place or apply excessive pressure. If you ever have serious issues inserting or removing an aligner, don’t hesitate to call us.
Finally, to remove your aligners, simply use your fingertip to push on the inside of your back molar. This should allow you to gently pull the aligner out and way, and repeat. Make sure to use every time of removal as a chance to brush and floss your teeth!
