What Issues Can Braces Address?
- Misalignment: Braces effectively correct misaligned teeth, enhancing both aesthetic appeal and functionality.
- Crowding: Overlapping or crowded teeth find resolution through the strategic application of braces, creating space for proper alignment.
- Bite Irregularities: From overbites and underbites to crossbites, braces offer targeted solutions to achieve a harmonious bite.
- Spacing Issues: Gaps between teeth are addressed, ensuring a uniform and aesthetically pleasing dental arch.
Benefits of Choosing Braces
- Improved Aesthetics: Braces contribute to a confident and radiant smile by aligning teeth, boosting overall facial aesthetics.
- Enhanced Functionality: Correcting misalignments and bite irregularities not only improves aesthetics but also enhances the overall functionality of the teeth and jaw.
- Long-Term Oral Health: Well-aligned teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of decay and gum disease. Braces contribute to long-term oral health benefits.
TYPES OF BRACES
Traditional Metal Braces
Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces and are more comfortable today than ever before. Made of high-grade stainless steel, metal braces straighten your teeth using metal brackets and archwires. With metal braces, you have the option of adding colored elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colorful smile.
PROS:
- Highly effective in addressing a wide range of orthodontic issues
- Cost-effective compared to some alternative orthodontic options
- Colored elastics offer a personalized touch
- Advances in design have led to increased comfort over time
CONS:
- The visibility of metal braces may be a concern for individuals who prioritize aesthetics
- Maintenance and cleaning require extra attention because of the brackets and wires
- May cause irritation or soreness initially as the mouth adjusts to the presence of the metal components
- Comes with dietary restrictions, particularly avoiding certain foods that are hard, chewy, crunchy, or sticky
Gold Braces
Gold braces are similar to traditional metal braces in many ways. They are made of stainless steel but are uniquely coated in gold. The gold coating may be considered a more cosmetic option than traditional metal braces, and the cost of gold braces is surprisingly comparable to most clear braces.
PROS:
- Provide a unique and luxurious aesthetic compared to metal braces
- Comparable in cost to clear braces
- Gold braces are highly effective in addressing various orthodontic issues
CONS:
- Visibility may still be a consideration for those who prefer a more discreet option
- Maintenance and cleaning require diligence
- Dietary restrictions are similar to those with traditional metal braces
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces are made of clear materials and are therefore less visible on your teeth than metal braces. For this reason, ceramic braces are used mainly on older teenagers and adult patients who have cosmetic concerns. While they are visually less prominent, they do require more attention to oral hygiene.
PROS:
- Less visible alternative to traditional metal braces
- Effective in addressing a variety of orthodontic issues
CONS:
- May require extra attention to oral hygiene
- Cost is often higher compared to traditional metal braces
- May cause slight irritation or soreness
Lingual Braces in Brooklyn, NY
Lingual braces are hidden behind the teeth and are therefore “invisible” when you smile. Lingual braces are 100% customized to match the shape of your teeth, and therefore, the metal appliances are created uniquely for you. Lingual braces are a very reasonable option for athletes, models, actors/actresses, musicians who play wind instruments, and professionals.
PROS:
- Offer an “invisible” orthodontic option as they are hidden behind the teeth
- Customized to match the shape of individual teeth
- As effective as traditional braces in addressing various orthodontic concerns
CONS:
- May initially cause discomfort or irritation as the tongue and mouth adapt to the presence of the braces behind the teeth
- Require additional care due to the hidden nature of the braces
- Cost is often higher compared to traditional metal braces
Other Special Types
1. SureSmile Braces
Technological advancements are made every day to improve all areas of our lives, and that includes orthodontics as well. SureSmile orthodontic technology is a new system for teeth straightening that is more accurate than molds and X-rays.
SureSmile provides a 3D computer model of your teeth, so your orthodontists can obtain a clearer picture of the way your teeth are growing. Armed with this knowledge, the orthodontist can more accurately devise a strategy to deliver you straighter teeth and a better smile. This new SureSmile system has been shown to reduce the amount of time you’ll need to wear braces by as much as 29%.
2. INBRACE Technology
Technological innovations are constantly entering our market. That includes the field of orthodontics. A recent introduction, INBRACE, is taking the orthodontic world by storm. This treatment method offers the invisibility and reliability of brackets and wire braces while removing the headaches of oral hygiene.
BENEFITS
- Digitally Designed: The patented Smartwire works to move teeth totally incognito. With advanced computer modeling and the assistance of AI technology, INBRACE moves teeth in a fast, safe, and healthy way.
- Invisible: Sitting neatly—and discreetly—behind your teeth, you can show off your smile on day one.
- Fast Results: You may notice visible improvements in your smile in as little as two weeks after beginning treatment.
- No Dietary Limitations and No Extensive Oral Hygiene Requirements: Once installed, INBRACE works behind your teeth to reshape your smile.
- Minimal Discomfort: Gentleforce™ Technology uses light, but consistent force to move teeth. With a small adjustment period (about one to two weeks), there is minimal discomfort with INBRACE.
- Friction-Free Tooth Movement: Average treatment periods involve two wires, which means fewer trips to the orthodontist office and greater comfort.
HOW INBRACE WORKS—Tiny Wire. Massive Benefits.
Computer AI uses the Gentleforce™ Technology to program the Smartwire according to your treatment plan goals. Brackets are placed on the back of your teeth to hold the wire in place. The Smartwire, once in place, works to move your teeth into the proper alignment. It is almost like having an autopilot system in your mouth!
3. Damon Braces
Many times, the conventional form of braces will require the removal of healthy teeth and the implementation of palatal expanders, which can feel as uncomfortable as they sound. The Damon System bracelift will help create a fuller smile and balance facial aesthetics.
Straighter teeth that are less crowded will also keep patients smiling more. They are used without the aid of tooth extractions and expanders and are easier to clean than brackets. The Damon System can achieve the same results of giving you a great, full, natural smile in a shorter time and at a cost that is comparable to metal braces or even Invisalign.
BENEFITS
- Available in Clear Brackets: With the choice of Damon Clear, the braces are virtually invisible, so you’ll never have to worry about being embarrassed or afraid to smile.
- Safe & Effective: Just because the Damon System works fast, does not mean that the effects of the treatment are shortened or are in any way dangerous. The system is just another way to achieve the same results as traditional braces with brackets, but through the use of a low-friction process that gently guides teeth.
Maintenance and Proper Oral Hygiene With Braces
Our orthodontist, Dr. Eisenberger, recommends that patients maintain proper oral hygiene to prevent bad breath, demineralization, cavities, and/or the onset of gum disease while wearing braces.
1. Foods to Avoid with Braces
Chewy and sticky foods, like licorice, taffy, bagels, and certain candies, can get stuck in the wires of your braces, making them difficult to clean. They can also pull the wires loose as you chew. Any sort of chewing gum should also be avoided for this reason.
Crunchy foods like popcorn and chips, and hard foods like nuts and hard candy, need to be avoided as well. Most candy falls into one of these categories and should be avoided. Your teeth don’t need all that sugar anyway!
Foods that you bite into can also pose a problem because they meet with your braces first instead of your teeth. Corn and apples are good examples of these types of food.
2. Brushing Your Teeth With Braces
Brushing your teeth with braces can be tricky. In this video, you will learn how to properly brush your teeth without causing damage to your brackets or wires.
3. Flossing Your Teeth With Braces
In addition to brushing your teeth, flossing while wearing braces is an important part of maintaining your oral health.
4. Using A Proxy Brush With Braces
There are a variety of tools available to help patients keep their teeth clean while wearing braces. Watch the video below to learn how to use the proxy brush to clean the spaces between the wires of your braces and your gums.
